For the first time since its inception in 2010, the National Māori Housing Conference returned to Rotorua this year. The biennial event serves as a gathering point for individuals from all corners of Aotearoa, spotlighting regional leadership and contributions to the Māori housing sector. Functioning as a platform for exchanging ideas, networks, and solutions, the conference aims to advance the cause of affordable, quality housing for Māori communities.
For our team at Activities and Events Unlimited, this presented an incredible opportunity to contribute our event styling and theming expertise to enhance the atmosphere. Our Director, Deb Wootton felt honoured when The National Māori Housing Conference approached our team to take on the event theming of the conference held in her hometown, the cultural heartland of Rotorua.
Cultural Connection and Purpose
Our task was to seamlessly blend culture and creativity, giving visual life to the event.
We rolled up our sleeves and got to work on some exciting projects. A custom-designed stage stole the spotlight, featuring a meeting house crafted from LED tubes. Greenery and local cultural elements were integrated throughout the event design.
The gala dinner setup featured a meeting house on the stage, over the band and beautiful centrepieces for over 50 tables. Our designs reflected the event’s cultural richness and community spirit. Despite time constraints, our innovative approach to conference theming resonated, amplifying the event’s message of unity and heritage.
Local connections and relationships were crucial in making the event successful under a tight timeframe. Collaborations with local suppliers and community groups were essential.

The journey of the National Māori Housing Conference highlights the power of community-driven collaboration. Driven by shared passion between the cause and the community, this conference’s impact continues to grow, promising a brighter future for Māori housing.
